ALER and LACLIMA Promote Discussion on a Just Transition at the Bonn Conference (SB64)

ALER and LACLIMA will host a workshop on 16th June in Bonn (Germany), dedicated to the just transition in CPLP countries, within the framework of the 64th Session of the Subsidiary Bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (SB64).

Taking place from 8th to 18th June, SB64 represents a strategic milestone in the international climate calendar, bringing together negotiators, governments, multilateral institutions, and civil society at a critical stage in preparation for COP31. In a context marked by geopolitical instability, the energy crisis, and the intensification of climate impacts, these sessions are crucial for accelerating the implementation of climate commitments and the energy transition.

Within this context, ALER and LACLIMA are organising the workshop “Just Transition in CPLP Countries: Pathways for Implementing the Transition Away from Fossil Fuels”, with the aim of fostering political and technical dialogue among representatives of Portuguese-speaking countries attending the Bonn conference.

The initiative is based on the recognition that the just transition agenda – including the process of transitioning away from fossil fuels (TAFF) – is becoming increasingly central to climate discussions, requiring greater clarity regarding implementation mechanisms, governance models, and practical solutions.

The workshop will bring together negotiators, government representatives, civil society organisations, and multilateral institutions, creating a platform for exchange focused on identifying challenges, opportunities, and areas of convergence among CPLP countries.

The event aims to promote the sharing of experiences in the post-COP30 context; discuss the institutional and political arrangements required for implementation; explore instruments such as the 2030 Cooperation Roadmap on Energy and Climate in CPLP Countries and the Just Transition Compass; and strengthen coordination among CPLP countries in international negotiations.

The programme will include an institutional opening session as well as an interactive discussion aimed at identifying priorities and concrete implementation pathways.

Holding this workshop during SB64 is particularly relevant as it provides an opportunity to connect international discussions with the specific realities of Portuguese-speaking countries, which face diverse energy contexts and development challenges.

By promoting this dialogue, ALER strengthens its role as a cooperation platform within the CPLP, helping to align the international climate agenda with implementation needs across member countries. As coordinator of the Energy and Climate Thematic Commission of the CPLP Consultative Observers, recently joined by LACLIMA, ALER continues to facilitate coordination and cooperation among Portuguese-speaking countries in advancing this agenda.
