SEforALL, Enabel and FUNAE support new Financing Coalition to Accelerate Rural Electrification in Mozambique
The Government of Mozambique announced, during a high-level meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly and Climate Week NYC, its intention to establish a Strategic Financing Coalition for Off-Grid Electrification.
The initiative aims to bring together financial institutions, development partners, investors and public entities to strengthen financing for decentralised electrification solutions and expand energy access for communities that remain unconnected to the national electricity grid.
According to the initiative’s promoters, Mozambique’s electrification pathway identifies the need for approximately 2.5 million new off-grid connections, corresponding to an estimated investment requirement of USD 1.1 billion. Mobilizing these resources is considered essential to achieving the country’s universal energy access targets.
The initiative is supported by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), Enabel, and FUNAE – Fundo de Energia, FP (ALER Member), and builds on the PURE Mozambique Rural Climate Project, financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The objective is to strengthen the link between climate finance, development finance and private investment to accelerate the deployment of sustainable energy solutions in rural areas.
According to the partners involved, the new coalition is expected to expand energy access, promote local economic development and create opportunities for productive activities in rural communities, while also strengthening climate resilience and energy inclusion in Mozambique.
