Cape Verde strengthens its commitment to renewable energy
Cabo Verde has taken new steps in its energy transition with the inauguration of three clean energy projects promoted by ALER Members, strengthening electricity generation from renewable sources across several islands in the country.
The first project, the Norte de Baía/Salamansa Photovoltaic Solar Station, developed by APP – Águas de Ponta Preta in partnership with Impulso Solar, has an installed capacity of 5 MW. This plant is expected to supply over 15% of the energy consumption of São Vicente Island, contributing to approximately 40% of the island’s electricity being generated from renewable sources.
Also within APP’s investment portfolio, the Santo Antão Solar Photovoltaic Power Station was recently inaugurated. As the largest renewable energy source on the island, the plant has an installed capacity of 1,2 MW. This project increases the share of renewable energy in Santo Antão to over 25%, significantly reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The third project concerns the expansion of the Santiago Island Wind Power Station, managed by Cabeólica, which includes an additional 13.5 MW – representing half of Cabo Verde’s installed wind capacity. The project also incorporates a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 6 MW/6 MWh, enhancing the stability and efficiency of renewable energy supply.
These initiatives represent significant milestones in consolidating the Cabo Verde’s energy transition, reaffirming the country’s commitment to achieve 50% of electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030.
