Energy transition of Portuguese-speaking countries highlighted at II CPLP Energy Conference

Cooperation and the promotion of partnerships and investments in the energy transition within the Lusophone world will be the focus of discussions at the 2nd CPLP Energy Conference, taking place from 27th to 28th May at the Estoril Congress Center in Cascais.

Under the topic Driving a Resilient, Sustainable and Inclusive Energy Transition for the CPLP, this high-level event brings together government officials, investors, business leaders, regulators, and energy experts from the nine member states and four continents of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). It will be held alongside the 3rd Meeting of CPLP Energy Ministers, scheduled for the day before.

Organized by the Government of São Tomé and Príncipe, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the CPLP, and with institutional support from Portugal’s Ministry of Environment and Energy, the conference aims to strengthen collaboration among countries and stakeholders, while highlighting the CPLP’s geostrategic role in the energy sector.

The event is coordinated by the CPLP’s Consultative Observers Energy Thematic Commission, led by ALER and Association of Energy Regulators of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (RELOP). It marks the 10th anniversary of the first CPLP Energy Conference, which was promoted by Timor-Leste’s presidency of the CPLP and also held in Cascais.

“This Conference will serve as a regional platform for discussing the challenges CPLP member states face in financing their energy transitions, decarbonizing their economies, and strengthening climate resilience, while also debating cooperation strategies and partnerships that can accelerate this journey,” said Nelson Cardoso, Minister of Infrastructure and Natural Resources of São Tomé and Príncipe.

“The presence of high-level representatives from CPLP governments will foster political coordination and alignment in diplomatic, technical, and economic cooperation, in preparation for upcoming international forums and commitments—most notably COP30, to be held in Brazil this November,” added ALER President Mayra Pereira.

“Regulation plays a crucial role in the energy transition, promoting the adoption of sustainable and efficient policies and practices. Strong and transparent regulation ensures a successful energy transition, contributing to economic development and environmental protection for future generations,” stated RELOP President Sandoval Feitosa.

Following the opening and welcome session, the two-day Conference will feature a series of ministerial, high-level, and technical sessions covering topics such as public policies for the energy transition, energy planning, fuel diversification, the power systems of the future, decarbonization and the green economy, and financing and investment.

The event’s partners include ADENE – Portugal’s Energy Agency and the Municipality of Cascais.
