Mozambique accelerates energy transition with new renewable sector brief

The Mozambican Renewable Energy Association (AMER) and ALER have officially launched the 4th edition of the Briefing: Renewables in Mozambique 2024 during RENMOZ 2025, held on 23rd and 24th April 2025, in Maputo. The document, available for free, is already accessible online.

This publication, which was developed with the support of the GET.invest Mozambique programfunded by the European Union and Germany and part of the European GET.invest programme —, presents the main developments, trends and opportunities in the renewable energy sector in Mozambique, bringing together updated and strategic data on the sector’s performance.

Highlights of the 2024 edition include:

  • The national electrification rate reached 60.1%, with significant progress both on-grid and off-grid;
  • National installed capacity is expected to grow by 227% by 2030, from 2,900 MW to 9,472 MW;
  • Over 740,000 solar home systems (SHS PAYGO) were sold by 2024;
  • An estimated USD 80 billion will be needed by 2050 to finance the Energy Transition Strategy (ETS);
  • The country projects 14 GW of hydropower capacity, 7.5 GW solar, and 2.5 GW wind by 2050;
  • Mozambique is strengthening its ambition to become a regional renewable energy hub, without repeating the historical emission mistakes of developed countries.

This edition also provides a detailed overview of the Energy Transition Strategy (ETS), which is structured around four pillars and 14 programs, including initiatives for universal energy access, green industrialization, and clean transportation.

According to AMER President Ricardo Pereira, “this briefing is more than a snapshot: it is a compass pointing to where we want to go. It shows that the sector is more mature, attractive, and aligned with global energy transition goals. It is essential that all stakeholders — public and private — use this tool to further drive the transformation of the sector.”

Meanwhile, ALER President Mayra Pereira states, “Mozambique is taking solid steps toward a clean, resilient, and inclusive energy matrix. This publication reinforces the commitment of our associations to providing qualified information and promoting a more favorable environment for investment and cooperation in the renewable sector.”

The Briefing: Renewables in Mozambique 2024 is an essential tool for investors, policymakers, academics and all stakeholders who are involved or looking to enter the sector. It offers up-to-date data, strategic analysis and a clear vision of the path Mozambique is paving to ensure a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient energy future.
